A Message from Our CEO - David McGill
Thursday 23 December 2021
Dear Badminton Ireland Members
As we come to the close of another year, COVID 19 continues to impact our lives and our Sport. It has been a challenging year for indoor Sport, with more setbacks than we had initially anticipated. Despite this, many of our clubs and members are returning to the Sport. At the time of writing this message to you all, 86% of our clubs have reaffiliated for the coming year. Special mention must go to all the volunteers at Club, County, and Branch level who worked under extraordinary circumstances to restart clubs, re-engage with their members and run competitions in line with government restrictions.
Throughout 2021, Badminton Ireland provided guidance and support to our members, this included:
Free insurance for all clubs and members throughout 2021.
Updated COVID 19 protocols and guidance.
We launched our This Is Badminton campaign to promote the return to Badminton.
We secured and distributed over €80,000 in funding, via the COVID support scheme, to our Branch network
We secured and distributed over €290,000 in funding, via the COVID Club Resilience scheme, to our County and Club network.
As we look to 2022, Badminton Ireland will continue to support our members and work to recover from the impact of COVID 19. The pandemic is not over and will likely continue to impact us for the year ahead. I will continue to work with Sport Ireland and other key stakeholders to ensure that measures are in place for the safe participation of Badminton throughout 2022. We will continue to support all our Volunteers, Clubs, Counties, and Branches to deliver programmes and opportunities to promote Badminton at a grassroots level.
In the new year, Badminton Ireland will launch a new strategic plan that will outline the framework for our Sports development for years to come. Thanks to the support of Sport Ireland (https://www.sportireland.ie/news/major-eu80m-funding-boost-for-sports-to-recover-grow-and-attract-people-nationwide), we will also be able to announce a range of measures to support grassroots badminton through COVID 19 and beyond. For now, on behalf of the Board and staff of Badminton Ireland, I would like to wish you a happy holiday and a brighter new year.
