Ireland come away with two victories on the opening day of the 2021 European Championships.
In men's singles Nhat Nguyen beat Daniel Nikolov from Bulgaria 24-22 21-14 in his opening round. Tomorrow he will face Zvonimir Durkinjak of Croatia in his last 32 match.
Rachael Darragh beat Marija Sudimac of Serbia 13-21 21-17 21-8 in her opening round match. Tomorrow Rachael will face Ksenia Polikarpova of Israel in her last 32 match.
Kate Frost and Moya Ryan lost out to the host nation players Polina Buhrova and Mariia Stoliarenko of Ukraine in a match that really could of gone either way. The Irish lost 21-17 21-19.
Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds lost out to Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley 21-11 21-13. The irish didn't get their best level out today. Paul Reynolds will be back on court with Rachael Darragh tomorrow in mixed doubles.
"It was an opening day full of high's and lows. It is fantastic that both singles players have progressed into the last 32 of the event. The doubles will go away disappointed with the women losing a very even match and the men just not getting their best play out today. We look forward to our mixed doubles players starting tomorrow morning and hope we can get some more wins on the board for Ireland" High performance director Daniel Magee
