A Message from Our CEO- David McGill
Tuesday 22 December 2020
COVID 19 has dramatically changed the world and our Sport. As a valued member of Badminton Ireland, you have likely not been able to participate in the Sport in any meaningful way since the April. Club and hall closures, competitive or social play, cancelled leagues, tournaments, and courses – aspects of our sport that we used to take for granted, today are full of complications.
When the scope of the pandemic became clear, Badminton Ireland took action to introduce return to play protocols to keep our members safe and informed as they returned to the court. We worked with the Branches, Counties and Clubs to disseminate the protocols and explain some of the measures introduced. Badminton Ireland also ran a number of Webinars to keep our members informed and engaged throughout the lockdown.
In anticipation of the new season, we partnered with Blocworx to provide a simple contact tracing application that was free for all Members. Unfortunately, a second wave of the virus meant we where forced to lockdown for a second time. At this point, with the support of Sport Ireland, the board decided to extend free membership coverage to all member organisations and associated members for the entire 2020-2021 season. This allowed us to ensure the protection of our club network and sport by providing insurance, governance and allowing clubs and their members to return to play without delay, should the government guidance allow.
We have also finished our first round of Resilience clubs funding which will provide much needed support to our Member organisations. All of these initiatives show how Badminton Ireland is dedicated to supporting our members while also respecting the public health advice. Looking ahead to 2021, I expect COVID-19 will continue to impact our sport for the remainder of the current season. Yet we are optimistic: the news of highly effective vaccines is encouraging, and we will continue to support our members in any way we can.
We are hard at work internally to improve our service delivery and processes and we hope to engage with all our members throughout 2021 as we develop a strategy that will guide us out of the pandemic and improve our sport into the future. For now, on behalf of the Board and staff of Badminton Ireland, I would like to wish you a happy holiday and a happy, and above all healthy, 2021.
