Impressive performance means Nguyen progresses to the last 16 of European Games

Nhat Nguyen has progressed to the last 16 of the European Games in Minsk after some impressive performances in Group F...







Nhat Nguyen beat Luka Wraber of Austria 19-21 21-12 21-14 to secure a place in the last 16 of the European Games. Having beaten Nikolov of Bulgaria in his opening match and then losing to reigning champion Pablo Abian from Spain in a close encounter in his second match, Nhat needed to win his final group stage match to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition. The young Irish man showed some great character beating his opponent from Austria to progress to the last 16 in his first ever European Games. The draw for the last 16 in the men's singles will take place at 21:00 Irish time tonight.

Sam Magee and Chloe Magee will need to win their last group stage match tomorrow for a place in the last 8. The pair won a close opening match against Dremin and Dimova from Russia before losing an extremely close second game to Gicquel and Delrue of France. They will be competing at 10:00 am Irish time against Aliaksei Konakh and Silich Krestina of Belarus.

Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds did not qualify from Group B in the men's doubles however they had a good performance and a win today over Kristjan Kaljurand and Raul Kasner from Estonia 21-19 21-16. 

Rachael Darragh lost out today and missed out on qualification from Group E of the women's singles losing out to Mikkela Airi of Finland 16-21 19-21.







During the European Games Ireland have featured in four events which include:

- Nhat Nguyen in the men’s singles.

- Rachael Darragh in the women’s singles.

- Joshua Magee and Paul Reynolds in the men’s doubles.

- Sam and Chloe Magee in the mixed doubles.
