FZ Forza U13/U17 Irish Nationals Review

The FZ Forza U13/UJ17 Irish Nationals took place on February 16th/17th 2019. 87 players from across Ireland travelled to Lisburn to compete in the Nationals.

U17 Boys Singles

Winner – Matthew Cheung

The Semi-Finals for the U7 Boys Singles would see U15 Irish Nationals Champion Matthew Cheung meet Scott Guildea (3/4), whilst unseeded Vincent Pontanosa would play against number 2 seed Christopher O’Donoghue. Doubles partners Matthew Cheung and Vincent Pontanosa both won their Semi-Final Matches to set up an eagerly anticipated Final.  Cheung continued his impressive form after winning the Boys Singles U15 Irish Nationals two weeks before, he beat Pontanosa 21-12, 21-10 to claim the U17 Irish Nationals Boys Singles Title.


U17 Girls Singles 

Winner – Sophia Noble

All four seeds in the Girls Singles made the Semi-Final stage. The two top seeds Sophia Noble and Lucy Fox showed their class beating Fiona McAdams and Julia O’Reilly respectively. Both players were in excellent form going into the final. Sophia Noble has had tremendous 2019 so far reaching the Semi-Final of the Mixed Doubles Senior Nationals in February. She continued this impressive form by beating Lucy Fox in straight games 21-12, 21-14. Both players rallied well throughout the game but Noble proved to be too strong in the end.   


U17 Boys Doubles

Winners – Matthew Cheung / Vincent Pontanosa

Matthew Cheung and Vincent Pontanosa would reach their second final of the day in the Boys Doubles after beating Kevin Downey and David Downey in three games in the Semi-Finals 21-10,21-23, 21-17. The pair played against Scott Guildea/Ben Lawlor in the Final. Guildea/Lawlor beat the team of Stuart McCollam/Dylan Noble in the Semi-Finals 21-11, 24-22. Cheung/Pontanosa continued their impressive form against Guildea/Lawlor in the Final winning 21-14, 21-11. Cheung won his second Nationals title of the day after beating Doubles partner Pontanosa earlier in the day.


U17 Girls Doubles

Winners – Lucy Fox / Leonie Ward

The Girls Doubles final was contested between number one seeds Laura Comer/Fiona McAdams and Lucy Fox/Leonie Ward. Fox/Ward beat their opponents Stephanie Yen Lin Yip/Celine Yen Tong Yip 21-16,21-9 in the first Semi-Final whilst Number one seeds Comer/McAdams won 19-21, 21-9, 21-11. After an exciting Girls Doubles final Fox/Ward won the key points in the match to claim the U17 Nationals title 23-21,23-21 against Comer/McAdams.


U17 Mixed Doubles

Winners – Matthew Cheung / Sophia Noble

Number one seeds Matthew Cheung/Sophia Noble set up the final against Vincent Pontanosa/Lucy Fox by beating David Downey/Leonie Ward 21-13,21-17. Pontanosa/Fox upset number two seeds Kevin Downey/Fiona McAdams in a nail-biting Semi-Final 22-20, 16-21, 21-16. After an exhausting Semi-Final Pontanosa/Fox could not answer the excellent play of Cheung/Noble in the final. The final had some excellent play with Cheung/Noble coming out the winners 21-13, 21-17. Matthew won his third National Title of the day.


U13 Boys Singles

Winner – Christopher Chee

All four seeds in the boys singles made it to the Semi-Finals with Christopher Chee (1) beating Darragh Murtagh (3/4) 21-13, 21-12 whilst Senan O’Rourke (2) overcame Fionn Dowling (3/4) 21-14,21-16 to set up an interesting matchup between the top two ranked players in the U13 Irish National rankings in the final. Christopher Chee and Senan O’Rourke played a really high-quality final which went to three games. With little to choose between the players Chee broke away from O’Rourke in the third game to claim the U13 Irish Nationals title 21-18, 19-21, 21-4.


U13 Girls Singles

Winner – Siofra Flynn

The U13 Girls Singles final was played between Michelle Shochan and Siofra Flynn. Both players were dominant in their Semi-Final matches, Shochan beating Nicole Joy 21-12, 21-12 whilst Flynn defeated Rachel O’Flynn 21-14, 21-5. Both Siofra Flynn and Michelle Shochan showed off their excellent technique with some beautiful rallies. Flynn managed to overcome Shochan in two games, winning the final 21-17, 21-7.



U13 Boys Doubles

Winners – Fionn Dowling / Senan O’Rourke

After an exciting Semi-Final between Andrew Hassett/Jeffrey Rong and Darragh Murtagh/Praneel Reddy Vallapureddy. Hassett/Rong played against number one seeds Fionn Dowling/Senan O’Rourke in the U13 Boys Doubles Final. Dowling/O’Rourke proved too strong for number two seeds Hassett/Rong in the Final. Dowling/O’Rourke would come away with the victory 21-4,21-10.



U13 Girls Doubles

Winners – Siofra Flynn / Rachel O’Flynn

The top two seeds in the Girls Doubles played against each other in the U13 National Final. Siofra Flynn/Rachel O’Flynn beat Nicole Joy/Zarah Pender in the previous round to reach the final, where they would play Chloe McGrane/Michelle Shochan. McGrane/Shochan won their Semi-Final match convincingly 21-11,21-9 against Orlaith Evan/Ciara O’Shea. The final certainly didn’t disappoint with number two seeds McGrane/Shochan winning the first game 21-15. Flynn/O’Flynn had to respond in order to win the U13 Nationals title. The pair won the second game 21-13 to set up a third and final game. Flynn/O’Flynn proved to be too strong in the final game winning the final game 21-12 to win the match 15-21,21-13,21-12.



U13 Mixed Doubles

Winners – Fionn Dowling / Siofra Flynn

The mixed doubles final was contested between Fionn Dowling/Siofra Flynn and Darragh Murtagh/Nicole Joy. Dowling/Flynn beat Christopher Chee/ Rachel O’Flynn in straight games 21-13,21-12 to set up a final against Murtagh/Joy who overcame Senan O’Rourke/Chloe McGrane in three games 21-18,13-21,21-18. Dowling/Flynn proved too strong for Murtagh/Joy in the Mixed Doubles Final. Dowling/Flynn won the match 21-14, 21-11.
