Dolan claims two National titles; Sam & Chloe Magee win 11th National Title

FZ Forza Irish Senior Nationals & U15 Nationals Review

Johnathan Dolan had a superb Finals day at the FZ Forza Irish Nationals, winning both the Men’s Singles and the Men’s Doubles with partner David Walsh. Dolan beat last year’s finalist Joshua Magee in an epic three game match. Both players showed why they should be considered Ireland’s best. Dolan came out on top in the end with a 21-16,14-21,21-14. After beating David Walsh in the Men’s Singles Semi-Final, the pair teamed up to beat number one seeds Joshua Magee/Paul Reynolds in the Men’s Double Semi-Final before beating number two seeds Mark Brady/Ciaran Chambers in the Final. This victory was Dolan’s second Nationals title of the day and Walsh’s first Nationals title in his career.

Elsewhere, Sam Magee & Chloe Magee continued their dominance in the Mixed Doubles Irish scene with their 11th Nationals title in 12 years. The pair from Raphoe, Donegal, made smooth work of all their games up to the final where they met their toughest opposition in Paul Reynolds/Rachael Darragh. Reynolds/Darragh played exceptionally well and put the 11 time National winners in some tricky situations. The Magee siblings were too strong however, coming out on top with a 21-14,22-20.

Another stand out performance came from Kate Frost who beat the two time Women’s Singles National champion Rachael Darragh in straight games. Frost had an excellent tournament making it to the Mixed Doubles Semi-Finals with Daniel Magee and winning the Women’s National Title for her first National win. She beat Darragh, 21-15,21-12.

Rachael Darragh despite losing two finals in the day, won the Women’s Doubles title with Sara Boyle. This was a great achievement by Darragh to make three finals and ending the weekend with two silvers and one National title. Boyle/Darragh won their Women’s Doubles final against Orla Flynn/Vicki Pesti in straight games 21-11,21-13.

U15 Nationals

Those in attendance at Baldoyle Badminton Centre not only got to witness Ireland’s best senior players compete against each other but also, they would witness Ireland’s best up and coming stars. Both Matthew Cheung and Siofra Flynn made all three finals with Cheung winning two (Boys' Singles & Mixed Doubles) and Flynn winning one (Girls' Doubles). Siofra’s sister Neasa Flynn won two National titles herself beating her sister 21-18,16-21,21-19 in the Girls' Singles competition before teaming up with Siofra to beat Chloe Woods/Paige Woods in the Girls' Doubles Final. One of the matches of the U15 tournament came in the Boys' Doubles final. With Cheung/Frost showing great form going into the final. It was going to be a big task for James Fleming/Richard Kong to overcome this challenge. Despite losing the first game 8-21, Fleming/Kong battled back in the second game to win 21-17 and winning the final game 21-18.
