Listowel Open Week; Results

The Listowel Badminton Club held their annual open week competitions during last week and it proved to be another successful week with 90 players competing on the Thursday night in the div. 4 and 5 competitions and Saturday saw 9 counties represented in the div. 1/2/3 events with the general play being of a very high standard.

Eileen O’Connor (Kerry) and Seamus O’Dwyer (Limerick) defeated Lynda McCarthy (Kerry) and Kevin O’Callaghan (Limerick) 21-12; 21-15

Div.1&2 Ladies Final

Helen Twomey (Kerry) and Caroline Brown (Limerick) defeated Eileen O’Connor and Mairead O’Regan (both Kerry) 17-21; 21-11; 25-23

Div.1&2 Mens doubles final;

Kevin O’Callaghan (Limerick) and Barry Horgan

Michelle Kearney (Listowel) and Donnacha Moloney (Moyvane) defeated Elaine Hudson (Moyvane) and Patrick Corridan (Listowel) 21-11; 21-17

Elaine Hudson (Moyvane) and Chris Hayden (Killarney) defeated Rico Cheng (Killarney) and Maurice O’Shea (County, Tralee) 21-19; 21-12

Div. 5 mixed final;

Clare Stack (County, Tralee) and Mike O’Riordan (Iveragh) defeated Brenda McNamara (Listowel) and Paul Kennelly (Moyvane) 21-19; 21-12

Veterans;

Mary Miley (Wicklow) and Tom Clear (Kerry) defeated Olive Keane (Kerry) and Ml. McGrath (Waterford) 21-17; 21-14

The prestigious Listowel Club person of the year was awarded to Mrs. Betty Doolin at the club function on Saturday night last.  Mrs. Doolin’s selection was very well received as she has been a solid club worker for many years.

Kerry championships; Fresh from his success at the Listowel badminton open week local player Barry Horgan celebrated his 20th birthday in style by capturing the mens div. 2 doubles title at the Top Part badminton County championships at Tralee on Sunday last when partnering Moyvane’s Mike O’Connor to a great victory in a competition that produced an extremely high standard of badminton.  Well done, Barry
