Carlton Irish Para Championships 2014

Niall McVeigh Ireland’s World Para Badminton Champion was in the unusual position of coming in to a 4 Nations Para Badminton Championships seeking a win over England’s Andrew Martin to banish the memory of a European campaign which ended in a victory for the English No 1.  Niall was to turn in a series of performances which will rank with those who saw it as simply ‘memorable’.

With Niall’s old adversary Krysten Coombs(Eng) defeating Andrew Martin(Eng) early on, the stage was set for an interesting semi-final where McVeigh had come back from dropping the first game 22-20 to book his place in the final by taking the next two games 21-14 21-15 while Coombs was a 21-16 21-13 victor over Jack Shephard.

In the first game of the final McVeigh was leading 11-10 where both players were treating the spectators to a real feast of top class badminton and it was McVeigh who snatched the game 21-19.  The second set was similarly close with Coombs this time holding a 11-9 advantage.  Coombs led 19-17 but McVeigh didn’t lose a point from then on and secured the title.

In the Dwarf mens doubles it was Krysten Coombs/Jack Shepard (Eng) who lifted the title winning in three games 19-21 21-16 21-13 from Isaak Daglish/Andrew Martin (Eng)

Grant Hunter (Scot) secured the mens singles LD Division 1 title beating James Pert (Scot) 21-8 21-9 with Adam Smyth (Irl) taking the Division 2 title from Robert Lowery(Ire).  Michael Mccraw(Scot) saw off Ben Hayward(Ire) 21-18 in the deciding game to claim the Division 3 title with Joseph McLaughlin(Scot) beating Edward Coughlan(Ire) for the Division 4 title.  David Millar(Ire) was taken to three games by his clubmate from Lisburn Pan Disability in Division 5.

In the Standing SL3 mens singles Daniel Bethell(Eng) came out on top while Anthony Forster(Eng) recorded a straight games victory over Bobby Griffen(Eng) and Conor Dua-Harper(Eng) came through 21-15 21-15 in the wheelchair WH1 singles.

Jenny Gray(Scot) was pushed all the way in the LD womans singles Division 1 beating Claire O’Neill(Ire) 21-13 in the third while Marion O’Malley(Ire) and Karen Ann Lyttle(Scot) won Division 2 and 3 respectively.

The mens doubles LD division winners were Grant Hunter/James Pert David Adie/Colin O’Neill and Stephen Hopkins/Robert Lowery.
