The first weekend of the level 1 course was well received by the participants attending from around the country. There was a good balance of on court and off court work during the two days and plenty of though stimulated. The participants will now prepare for the second weekend of the course by completing independent study activities as they aim to develop their knowledge and skills. The level 1 is the first qualification in the Badminton Ireland coaching qualifications which qualifies successful candidates to work independantly as coaches in their local clubs. In order to pass the level 1 they must show competencies in a number of areas, and complete practical and theory work showing a good level of understanding and skills.
To assist the candidates in attaining the relevant level they gain access to a number of written and video resources to work from, all under the guidance of Badminton Ireland tutors. In conjuction with the course there are also mandatory requirements which coaches must complete which are to attend a child protection/code of ethics course, and to complete garda vetting or access NI. Following pass and completion of the course qualified level 1 coaches must join the BI Coaches Register to be insured to work as a coach. As a newly qualified coach it is not nessesary to undertake CPD activities in the first year of qualifying, however attending CPD activities such as the BI coaches conference is actively encouraged in order to broaden coaches understanding of the profession. The BI Coaches Conference 2013 will include presentations from Tom Reidy the BI Performance Director, and Dan Magee the BI National Coach. There will be presentations on a broad number of subjects including the Teicnic Badminton Program, including the launch of the latest level, and Shuttle-Time Schools Badminton Project.
