Blitz event concludes a fantastic 2019 Cork Schools Programme

The 2019 Cork Schools Programme came to a finale last Thursday when 150 primary school children from seven different schools participated in a blitz event. This programme, which is run in conjunction with Cork Sports Partnership and is supported through Sport Irelands Dormant Accounts Fund, has grown from strength to strength in its second year.

As part of this initiative participating schools engage in a number of steps, and avail of various support, to eliminate any possible barriers that they may be facing in terms of having badminton as a regular activity in their school. These steps and support consist of;

  • Upskilling teachers in the BWF Shuttle Time Coaching Award
  • Providing kitbags (rackets/shuttles/nets), lesson plans, and resources to the schools
  • Visits from a Badminton Ireland Licenced Coach to deliver a session to school pupils, and provide informal coach development opportunities through observation/shadowing
  • Access to participate in a blitz day were the emphasis is on the personal and social development of the participating school pupils by creating a fun, non-competitive, and social environment
  • Develop a link between schools and local juvenile clubs to create a pathway for all involved in the programme to the sport

A significant addition to this years programme were the coach visits to the schools delivered by Badminton Ireland Licenced Coach Tania O'Flynn. All the schools thoroughly enjoyed the coaching sessions, and the expertise, energy and enthusiasm from Tania greatly assisted the teachers and pupils in preparing for the blitz event.

Moreover, Banteer Juvenile BC and Coláiste Treasa Kanturk played a pivotal role in supporting the blitz event with coaches and volunteers who led the skills stations on the day. The blitz day was a success as a result of the efforts of; Patricia Buckley, Hannah Buckley, Holly O'Sullivan, Megan O'Connor, Rory O'Connell, Saoirse Foley, and Sofija Obrezane. They coached pupils from the seven schools in attendance at the event; Bunscoil Rinn an Chabhlaigh, Charleville CBS, Glantane NS, North Presentation Primary School , St. Killians, St. Mark's BNS, St. Mary's NS Carrigaline.

Finally, it must be said that we place the highest of values on our collaboration with Cork Sports Partnership for this programme. The team in Cork Sports Partnership, most notably staff members James Kirby and Maurice O'Sullivan, invest huge time in assisting us to deliver the programme at local level and as a result this project continues to grow and develop in Cork.
