Sophia Noble took gold at the Nottingham Gold star event with her partner Aimie Whiteman. Sophia also had a good result in the singles event reaching the semi-finals.

Sam and Chloe Magee were also busy preparing over the Christmas break. The Irish reached the last 16 of the Thailand Open BWF Super 300 event with a win over Sunjith and Sruthi of India. The pair then lost out to the number four seeds Cahyono and Kandow of Indonesia. The next event for the Irish will be the Malaysian Masters in Kuala Lumpar.

The Irish senior team also have the European mixed team finals in February. The Irish Nationals will take place in the lead up to this event on February 2nd and 3rd. This event will be a great opportunity for badminton fans to get a look at the team members in competition before they travel to Copenhagen.

“It has been an exciting start to 2019 already. Our players have had a short period off to recharge before another busy year ahead. There is a number of big events coming up including European Mixed Team Championships, European Games and the start of the 2020 Olympic Qualification. I am looking forward to following the players progress in 2019 and it is good to see our junior players continuing to produce medal results already this year” Performance and Training Director Daniel Magee
