Bulgaria were tipped to win the group as they have a number of top players in their panel. Ireland needed a full-strength line up to compete against the top seeds of the group who were playing at their home venue in Sofia.

Ireland took the match winning the mixed doubles, men’s singles and men’s doubles matches. Bulgaria proved to be too strong in the women’s disciplines as they took both the singles and doubles.

“The mixed doubles was always going to be important in deciding the winner of this match. We were confident that we could win both the men’s matches, and we knew that Bulgaria are very strong in the women’s disciplines as they have a number of top players that they could choose from. It was very important to win the opening tie to add some pressure to Bulgaria. All of the team performed well tonight and we hope to carry this good form into our next game against Finland tomorrow, which is set to be another tough test” Daniel Magee Performance and Training director
