AIG FZ Forza Irish Open Preview

With the AIG FZ Forza Irish Open less that a week away here is a quick guide to the tournament.


Venue: National Indoor Arena

Dates: 14th -17th November

Times: Qualification - 11am (Wednesday)

            Round 1 to Last 16 - 9am (Thursday)

            QF - 10am (Friday)

            SF - 5pm (Friday)

            Finals - 1.30pm (Saturday)


Coverage: All courts will be on Badminton Europe YouTube

                 Finals TV Coverage to start at 4.25pm on TG4

Tickets - Free tickets are available on Eventbrite. These tickets will reserve you a seat for the Finals Day up to 3.30pm in prime locations. 

*Tickets are not required to attend; all spectators will be welcomed for general seating*

Men's Singles

Number 1 seed: Raul Must (Estonia)

Highly anticipated Irish match: Round 1 Match of Main draw - Joshua Magee (IRL) vs Nick Fransman (7) (NED). Thursday third game on court 2.

Number of Irish Players: 11 Players

Things to Note: Only Joshua Magee qualified automatically for MS main draw. There will be 10 Irish players playing in qualifying on Wednesday including Jonathan Dolan who is seeded 8th in qualifying. Qualification for MS starts at 11am on Wednesday.


Women's Singles

Number 1 seed: Soraya De Visch Eijbergen (Netherlands)

Highly anticipated Irish match: Round 1 Match of Main Draw - Yaelle Hoyaux (FRA) vs Rachael Darragh (IRL). Thursday 2.25pm

Number of Irish Players: 8 Players

Things to Note: Sara Boyle & Rachael Darragh both qualify automatically to the Main Draw. Sara Boyle faces tough opposition in Se Young An from Korea in her first round match. This will be played at 12:15pm on Thursday. A win for Rachael in her first round match could see her face number five seed Airi Mikkela of Finland in the second round.

Men's Doubles

Number 1 seeds: Peyo Boichinov & Ivan Panev (Bulgaria)

Highly anticipated Irish match: Joshua Magee & Paul Reynolds (3) will play the winner of Adam McAllister/Brian O'Mahony (IRL) & Dominic Ashton/Brandon Zhi Hao Yap (ENG) at 7.45pm on Thursday. 

Number of Irish Players: 10

Things to note: Joshua Magee will be looking to make his second final in a row, after doing so last year with his brother Sam. This year he teams up with Paul Reynolds and they have received the number three seed in the competition.

Women's Doubles

Number 1 seeds: Lise Jaques & Flore Vandenhoucke (Belgium)

Highly anticipated Irish match: Round 2 fixture - Sara Boyle & Rachael Darragh (IRL) vs Alzbeta Basova & Michaela Fuchsova (2) (CZE). Thursday final game on court 2.

Number of Irish Players: 9

Things to note: As there is no qualifying for the WD all pairings will be automatically in the Main Draw. Kate Frost & Moya Ryan have received a first round bye and will face the winner of Fankhauser/Tabeling & Hopton/Williams at 6.25pm on Thursday. 


Mixed Doubles

Number 1 seeds: Sam Magee & Chloe Magee (Ireland)

Highly anticipated Irish match:  Round 2 fixture Sam Magge & Chloe Magee will play the winner of Corvee/Lambert (FRA) & Ashton/Taylor(ENG) on court 1 around 11.30am on Thursday.

Number of Irish Players: 16

Things to note: Sam & Chloe Magee look to reach the final for the second year in a row. Last year they narrowly lost in the Final to English pairing Mairs/Moore 21-16,21-13.
