The 2018 European Senior Championships got underway on Monday the 24th of September in Guadalajara Spain.  There were 1200 competitors taking part in this year’s championship with 40 finals taking place across the age categories from 35+ all the way up to 75+. After a long week of competition Ireland managed to secure four finals across two age groups. In the opening two mixed finals both Irish pairs lost out in three games.

In the over 50 mixed number two seeds Rajeev Bagga and Elizabeth Austin (ENG) beat Mark Topping and Dorothy McCullough 19-21 21-18 21-16. In the Over 55 mixed Jan Bertram Petersen and Jeannette Van Der Werff  (DEN/NED) beat Graham Henderson and Pam Peard 17-21 22-20 21-14

Next up for the Irish was two doubles finals. In the Women’s doubles final in the over 55 section. Number one seeds Heidi Bender and Svetlana Zilberman (GER/ISL) beat Pam Peard and Sian Williams 21-12 21-10

The last hope for Ireland to take gold was Mark Topping and Graham Henderson in the over 50 men’s doubles. The Irish pair who have previously won an All-England senior medal and World senior championship silver medal faced Magnus Nytell and Erik Soderberg of Sweden. The pair dominated the final to bring home a gold medal for Ireland winning 21-12 21-18.

There were many strong performances over the week by these five players and many other Irish players also. To bring home a European medal of any colour is huge achievement. One gold and three silver medals is an impressive feat and a reflection of all the hard work and dedication these players have shown over the years. Badminton Ireland would like to congratulate all the players involved over the week. For a full list of the Irish results over the week click here
