Niall McVeigh looks for Dubai title

Niall McVeigh began his quest for the 1st Fazza Dubai Para-Badminton title which got underway at the Shabab Al-Ahli Sports Club yesterday (Thursday).

Niall could hardly have wished for a more difficult opener than facing current World champion in the SS6 category, England’s Jack Shephard and was always chasing the match after Shephard raced into a 9-2 lead and was 11-6 up at the interval, capturing the set 21-13.

Nevertheless, Niall was to put his disappointment behind him when he took to the court for his second match in Group A and recorded a fine 21-7 21-7 victory over India’s Sunil Pradhan which took just 22 minutes.

This victory was sufficient to see Niall secure a place in the quarter-final where he is due to face the No3/4 seed Taresoh Didin (Malaysia) for a place in the semi-final with No2 seed Krysten Coombs the likely opponent.

Taresoh was seeded No2 in the World Championships in Korea and went on to lose a semi-final to the eventual champion Jack Shephard.

It is interesting that Niall has teamed up in the Men’s Doubles with a certain Malaysian by the name of Taresoh Didin and they are due to meet Gagandeep Grewal (India) and Hector Jesus Salva Tunque (Peru) in their opening group match on Friday with a later clash against the No2 seeds Man Kai Chu and Chun Yim Wong likely to decide the outcome of  Group B later.
