Student Sport Ireland Badminton League Finals Preview

The Student Sport Ireland Badminton League finals takes place this coming Tuesday the 06th of March in Baldoyle Badminton Centre, and it promises to be the most fiercely contested finals day in recent years with the draw throwing up some eagerly awaited clashes.

All eyes will be on defending champions IT Blanchardstown (ITB) who boast the talents of Luke Moore and Megan Bredin in their ranks. Bredin and Moore have already tasted success together in this year’s SSI/BI XD Open event, while Luke also went on to capture the inaugural SSI/BI MS Open title in recent weeks. It is expected, that particularly with this pairing, ITB will be hard stopped, but they can expect a testing semi-final when they face the winners of Dundalk IT (DKIT) and Griffith College Dublin (GCD).

Dundalk, who were the 2016 winners of this event, will enter this tie as favourites having topped a competitive pool C that seen them twice narrowly defeat a strong Letterkenny IT (LYIT) team. Despite some promising results in their pool, and their experience of reaching the quarter-final stages last year, the challenge of DKIT might prove to be a bridge too far for the Griffith students. Should this result transpire, DKIT will hoping to avenge last year’s 3-2 quarter-final defeat to ITB.

Elsewhere, it is very difficult to predict who will progress to the final from the opposite side of the draw, with all colleges’ realistic contenders for the outright top prize on offer. IT Carlow will go head-to-head against the winners of IT Tallaght / Letterkenny IT for a place in the final. The Carlow students, who fell short in last year’s event at the semi-final stage to ITB, will look to recent SSI/BI WS Open winner Tan Wee Ling to lead the charge for them. However, they can expect stern opposition from the victors of IT Tallaght / LYIT, a match which promises to be a highly entertaining encounter.

The Tallaght students last won a Student Sport Ireland Badminton title in 2011/2012 when winning Division 2 of the league that season, will be quietly confident of making a big impact on finals day this year, particularly with Irish international Kate Frost in their team. However, Letterkenny IT will travel to Baldoyle with a team backboned by a number of members from the famous Raphoe BC in Donegal, and Galway man Jack Davies, ensuring that this match is likely to go to the wire.

One certainty is that the outright winner of the 2017/2018 SSI Badminton League will have been deserving winners. IT Blanchardstown, who won the SSI Badminton League for the first time ever last season, will look to create more history by becoming the first college to successfully defend their crown.
