Semi final places up for grabs at Senior World Championships in Kochi
15 September 2017
Mark Topping and Graham Henderson are bidding for a place in the semi-finals of the Over 50 Men’s Doubles in the BWF World Senior Championships being staged in India this week.
Having reached the quarterfinal with a tight 40 minute encounter against the Japanese pair Fumiaki Matsuura and Koichiro Oura they were never behind in the opening set dominating throughout to win 21-7 but the second was a totally different proposition and it was nip and tuck throughout with the Irish pair finding themselves 6-4 in arrears whilst being ahead at 17-16 they were to lose the second 21-19.
However the Irish pair were to regain the initiative and were the dominant force in the decider to ease through 21-11 and meet the No3/4 seeds Magnus Nytell and Erik Soderberg of Sweden later today for a place in the semis.
Mark Topping and England’s Debora Miller, the No3/4 seeds, are already through to the quarter-finals of the Over 50 Mixed Doubles with a straight set victory over Gene Austin Joyner/Elena Golubeva and now face Bhushan Akut/ Saroj Sawant for a place in the semi-finals while in the 55+ Mixed Doubles Graham Henderson and England’s Susan Tooke are up against the No3/4 seeds from Japan Noriaki Matsunari/Miyoko Sato with the semi-final awaiting the winner, after a 21-6 21-15 victory over the French pair Jean-Michel Edard/Chantal Piron and England’s John Kindred/Janice Flower were overpowered 21-11 21-8.
