4 Nations Disabled Badminton Championship Scotland 2010

4 Nations Disability ScotlandOn the 19th February 2010, six players from the Pan-Disability Lisburn Badminton Club travelled to Glasgow to take part in the third annual Scottish 4 Nations Disabled Badminton Championships.

The first player to take to the court was Gary Bailie, playing in the Learning Disability Class 3 Men’s Singles.  Gary played well winning one game and despite strong performances in his other two group games was unable to progress to the knock out stages.  Later in the weekend Gary combined with the Men’s Class 2 winner, Sam Muschamp, to claim the Learning Disability Class 2 Men’s Doubles title, winning all their matches convincingly.

Playing in the Women’s Wheelchair Class 2 event, Laura-Lee Jenkins was defeated in the final 9-21, 22-24, pushing Bernadette O’Driscoll all the way.  With only two female players entered in the wheelchair event, Laura-Lee also had the opportunity to play in the Men’s Singles event.  Although she lost all three matches against some very tough opposition, this experience will be invaluable in her build-up to the European Championships in May.  Laura-Lee then joined with Gobi Ranganathan to compete in the Wheelchair Mixed Doubles competition and despite playing well they were beat 18-21, 19-21.

In the Dwarf Men’s Singles, Sport NI funded Niall McViegh, the reigning World Champion, lost 16-21, 19-21 in the Semi-Finals to Krysten Coombs from England.  Niall McVeigh overcame his disappointment of losing in the Semi-Final of the Dwarf Men’s Singles to play with Krysten in the Dwarf Men’s Doubles and pick up a silver medal.

Finally Emma Farnham picked up a silver medal in the Dwarf Ladies Doubles with her Scottish partner Deirdre Nagel.  Emma then joined up with her Club mate, David Kelly, to compete in the Dwarf Mixed Doubles and claim another silver medal.

The players will now be working towards the next leg of the 4 Nations Disability Championships in Manchester in April, closely followed by the European Championships in Switzerland in May.
